It occurred to me over the weekend that the term “senior students” refers to different grade levels different places. Here in Ontario, Grades 7 and 8 are the “senior elementary” grades. And to keep things especially confusing, they are also known as junior high and middle school. At any rate, I wanted to be clear that “senior” in this context doesn’t NOT refer to youth in their last year of high school – but of course, if you want to bring any of these activities into your high school classroom, feel free!
The exercise in today’s video is a Forced-Choice all about sexual orientation. My hope is that by forcing folks to choose a single orientation label for the fictional folks involved, they’ll start to see that our human experience of sexuality and attraction is often more complex, and difficult to define in strict ways.
If you tried to the scenario I outlined in the video, and you’d like to keep going, here are a few more statements for you.
Statement 1: When Tasha was little she had a crush on her kindergarten teacher Ms.Mills. In grade 5 she had a crush on Mya, last year she had a crush on Hannah and then on Jessie. This year, she has a crush on Dominica. Tasha’s never had a crush on anyone who wasn’t a girl.
Statement 2: Jessie is a trans girl, meaning that although she was assigned male at birth, she identifies as a girl.
Statement 1: Jamie and Taylor share kissed a last night. It was the first kiss for both of them.
Statement 2: Now they’re getting ready to see a movie. Jamie decides to wear a skirt.
Statement 3: Jamie is so glad Taylor joined the basketball team. Otherwise they might never have met.
Statement 1: Today, Rita, her husband Jack, and her son Todd are going out for dinner.
Statement 2: They have to be back early though, because Todd has to pack. He’s going to his other mom, Amanda, to spend the weekend.
Statement 3: While Todd is with his other mom, Rita and Jack are having some old friends, Amber and Leilani over for dinner. Rita once dated both Amber, and she dated Leilani, but that was a long time ago.
